Self-reference . . . Quote from Wendell Berry

"Her tone of self-reference almost always carried an overtone of self-pity."

Wendell Berry, 'A World Lost,' fiction . . . . Sometimes it is easiest to tell the truth in a story . . . .

Our human capacity for being so extremely self-referenced and self-pitying--is a big part of the reason that the world is in the sorry shape it is.

Part of the maturing process involves a fearless personal moral inventory. We must recognize our own history of self-reference and self-pity, as well the self-reference and self-pity that exists in our cultures and our religions. We must work hard to compare our actual situation to how most people really live, not just the people we know or who live in our town or country. We must compare our lives to those who live in impoverished and war torn nations. We must recognize our own privilege. And then we must find ways to lift up those who suffer from our lack of compassion and even the score. To truly create Peace on Earth, nothing less will do.
