Underneath the Forest is Beautiful

Underneath the Forest is Beautiful

Continuity in Palestinian Historical Narratives

The myth of Palestine as an empty and arid land becomes more plausible in the Jewish psyche when all evidence of Palestinian villages are razed to the ground and forests and settlements have been built over them. Israeli narratives of the Jewish people returning to their empty homeland has a more solid impact on the psyche of the Jewish immigrant when Palestinian villages no longer exist to incite any questions on the indigenous population of the area. The role of this post is to point to the fact that the territorial continuity that the Israelis claim to exist between the Hebrews of yesterday and the Israeli settlers of today is not real: it is a constructive narrative of one Jewish organization known as the Jewish National Fund.  (Pappe, Ilan, The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, p. 227).

Destroying any trace of Palestinian villages, farms and orchards in land designated as Jewish in the United Nations Partition agreement has two major objectives in Israeli historical narratives. The first is to focus territorial disagreement between Palestinians and Israelis on land occupied by Israel in 1967. In the Israeli mindset, having no visible trace or evidence of a previous Palestinian presence in Israel removes an possible justification for considering this illegally claimed property and land on the podium of negotiations between the two parties (Pappe, Ilan, The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, p. 221).  It also implies that the Palestinian Right to Return will not be recognized because any traces of Palestinian existence in the area has been hidden underneath the forests constructed by the Jewish National Fund. Second, everything in Gaza and West Bank, according to Israel, is open to negotiation due to the illegal Israeli settlements located in the West Bank and currently the illegally confiscated territory in Gaza as security buffers between Israel and the Palestinians living in Gaza.

Just like the olive trees that have been spotted making their way back to the top soil of these forests and overrunning the conifers (pine and cypress trees) that the Jewish National Fund has been so readily to plant instead of the indigenous trees (almond and olive trees) Palestinians have to make their voice heard by commemorating the Palestinian villages that lie underneath the soil. The settlement of Mijda Ha-Emek lies over the Palestinian village of Mujaydil, the settlement of Tirat Hacarmel settles over the Palestinian village of Tirat Haifa, Qiryat Shemona settlement replaced the Palestinian Khalsa village, and Ashkelon settlement has taken over the land the belonged to Majdal. Note that each Palestinian village was replaced by a Hebrew version of the Arabic name.

Not only were entire villages razed to the ground, architectural buildings that called attention to the Palestinian presence in Jewish urban areas were targeted by the Jewish National Fund for destruction in order to maintain the false historical narrative of Jewish only presence in the area. Masjad al Khayriyya in the City of Givatayim and Sarafand mosque in Haifa were destroyed. Church of Birwa in the Jewish settlement of Ahihud no longer exists there. Majdal and Qisarya mosques have been converted to restaurants, and the Beersheba mosque into a shop. Five thousand dunams of Huj village makes up Ariel Sharon’s private ranch of Havat Hashikmim.

We must all continue to approach the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from the starting point of the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people from their rightful property. The trauma and memory of fear as the Palestinians sought refugee from the horrors of the Jewish militia need to be the starting point in any dialogues between Palestinians and Israelis. We  must work diligently to replace the fabricated Israeli narratives as a continued presence in the area with the authentic version of the ancient and the on-going Palestinian presence in the area.

Ilan Pappe's Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine

File:Pappe - The Ethnic Cleancing of Palestine.jpg
Image from Wikimedia Commons.
The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, by Ilan Pappe

This very intelligent, well researched, and moving history reveals the forgotten events surrounding the Palestinian Nakba or catastrophe of 1948.  Pappe's primary source of information was the Israeli Government's own archives which were released to the public in 1980.  The timeline covered begins with the first Zionist agricultural colony in Palestine in 1878 and continues through the various armistice agreements concluding in 1949.

Of particular note, the false Israeli narrative which claims that an attack by Arab armies is what caused the Nakba and resulted in the displacement of approximately 750,000 Palestinian people--as well as the destruction of their homes, villages and urban centers-- from what had become the United Nations designated Jewish area is soundly refuted.

The Arab armies never invaded the UN designated Jewish area. The Arabs' presence, in and on the edges of the Palestinian designated area, was primarily to protect Palestinian villages and people.  (Pages 129 -130.)  It was the Jewish militias, such as Irgun and Hagana, that began the ethnic cleansing in 1931, if not earlier.  (Page 284.)  In fact, the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians by Jewish forces continued in the U.N. Jewish designated area during the war of 1948.  While the Arab forces were able to protect the designated Palestinian area, Jewish forces were completely undeterred in their efforts to remove Palestinians from what we now know as Israel.  (Pages 130 -131.)

This is a highly recommended read for everyone interested in gaining insight into the horrific events that lead up to the creation of Israel.  It also illustrates the importance The Right of Return has to Palestinians in negotiating a final and peaceful solution to the Palestinian - Israeli conflict. We begin to understand many details, for instance the University of Tel-Aviv is built on land that used to be the Palestinian village of Sheykh Muwannis. (Page 103.)   In embracing a true history, we must not erase the memory of the people that once called that piece of land their home.

The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine is available by request from book sellers and libraries everywhere.

Ethnic cleansing is a crime

"Ethnic cleansing is designated as a crime against humanity in international treaties, such as that which created the International Criminal Court (ICC), and whether 'alleged' or fully recognized, it is subject to adjudication under international law."

Ilan Pappe, Jewish Israeli Historian, 'The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine.'

Why does the US fund and arm Ethnic Cleansing?

Sample Letter:

I am very concerned about the US’s involvement with ethnic cleansing. As you know, “. . . ethnic cleansing is a well-defined policy of a particular group of persons to systematically eliminate another group from a given territory on the basis of religion, ethnic or national origin.  Such a policy involves violence and is often connected with military operations.  It is to be achieved by all possible means, from discrimination to extermination, and entails violations of human rights and international law . . . Most ethnic cleansing methods are grave breaches of the 1949 Geneva Convention and 1977 Additional Protocols.” Drazen Petrovic, ‘Ethnic Cleansing—An Attempt at Methodology’, European Journal of International Law, 5/3 (1994), pp. 342-60.

However, you may not be aware that " . . .  on a cold Wednesday afternoon, 10 March 1948, a group of eleven men, veteran Zionist leaders together with young Jewish military officers, put the final touches to a plan for the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. That same evening, military orders were dispatched to the units on the ground to prepare for the systematic expulsion of the Palestinians from vast areas of the country. The orders came with a detailed description of the methods to be employed to forcibly evict the people: large-scale intimidation, laying siege to and bombarding villages and population centers; setting fire to homes, properties and goods; expulsion; demolition; and, finally planting mines in the rubble to prevent any of the expelled inhabitants from returning."  Ilan Pappe, Israeli Historian, in 'The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine,’ from the preface, page xii.  This passage is very well documented in end notes; sources include the Israeli Defense Force's own archives.

If the ethnic cleansing of Palestine was something that only went on in 1948, perhaps we could forget about it today.  Unfortunately, many of the methods of the Israeli military and government outlined above have continued slowly and steadily until today while being interspersed with extreme punishing violence.  Israel has endeavored to keep their policies and practices of ethnic cleansing out of the media and out of the public eye and to blame its victims when we do become aware.  Even today—in our enlightened modern world, where we embrace religious plurality and racial diversity—this ethnic cleansing is going on, and the US supports it.

Israel claims its actions are in self defense.1 The US echoes this call; and sends military aid and arms against the tiny territories which remain of one of the oldest civilizations on earth.2 We send arms against the civilian populations of Gaza and the West Bank which are used for the purpose of ethnic cleansing.  Self defense would only be a reasonable and accurate claim if Israel retreated to its own legal and internationally recognized borders.3 Israel in its illegal occupation of the West Bank4 and its illegal blockade of Gaza5 is the aggressor.  This can be clearly seen by studying any map that shows the territory taken over by Israeli forces over the years and which continues today.6

In fact, there is a growing understanding in the world and even inside Israel, that it is Israel’s own aggressive actions that most threaten its security.7   We must rethink our support for Israel in the light of our  own values; the values of the separation of church and state; and the values of freedom, equality, and justice for all.  Withdrawing our military support from Israel’s ethnic cleansing activities and helping Israel to find ways to peacefully withdraw from its illegal occupation and illegal blockades is the right thing to do.  It is the only action we can take which supports our values.  And it is the only action we can take which will preserve our reputation in the world’s community of nations as a fair and just nation.

Why does the US fund and arm ethnic cleansing?  Perhaps this is just a rhetorical question.  The better question might well be; how are we going to defund and de-arm ethnic cleansing?
